About the Artists

The Armadillos

Toddler mosh pits; accordion enthusiasts; sweet old ladies who remember when Roy Acuff was still on the radio; mustache aficionados; – these are just a few of the characters you might encounter at an Armadillos show.

The Armadillos have spent the better part of six years crafting a fluid, flexible sound that keeps its feet firmly planted in the Appalachian folk tradition but often loses its head in the realms of alternative and punk rock. They’ve installed themselves in a multivariate music scene in their native city, earning the Pittsburgh City Paper’s distinction as the Best Alt-Folk/Alt-Country band for five years running. In between, they’ve taken their act on the road, covering ground from New York to Florida with frequent stopping points in Asheville, NC and West Virginia.

A flurry of Craigslist exchanges in the winter of 2008 eventually led accordionist Sheila Liming to Austin Vanasdale and Matt Rychorcewicz, two folk-bred string players who were looking to find a new angle for their all-acoustic sound. Liming and Vanasdale share song-writing duties as well as lead vocals, creating a tag-team vocal front for the band in the tradition of Johnny & June or Gram & Emmylou. Beneath it all, bassist Josh Dukes brings a driving, rockabilly-inspired rhythm and keeps things keepin’ on. The Armadillos are known for winning over live audiences with original songs that might be equally inspired by Hazel Dickens or by The Clash.

Nevertheless marks The Armadillos’ third full-length album since 2010. As album the title suggests, the band continues to look towards the future in spite of the obstacles (Liming recently relocated to North Dakota), and is planning new music for 2016.

The Hills and The Rivers

Rootsy, but fresh; soulful, but articulate; body-shakin, but delicate. The rhythm section rolls through the audience like the wake of a boat while the mandolin, flute, fiddle and vocal harmonies weave in and out like currents in a river.

Artist Biography:
The Hills & the Rivers is a Pittsburgh based diy folk band centered around the Hill siblings and a fluid yet stable collective of musicians. They blend the gritty sounds of the street with sophisticated lyrics and delicate harmonies while finding a balance between indie, folk, punk and pop.
